How safe and secure is Google Chrome's 'Incognito' feature?

Google Chrome is the most used browser in the world. In Europe, Australia, Russia, all the Americas and most other regions around the world, people use Google Chrome more than any other browser, and a large reason for this is Chrome’s ‘Incognito’ feature.

If you’re not aware, Chrome’s ‘Incognito’ mode is a browsing mode within the Chrome browser that allows users to surf the net without any of their browsing history being recorded within Chrome. When using ‘Incognito’ mode, all your browsing history is deleted, and when the ‘Incognito’ window is closed, all the cookies that have been created during that session are also deleted.

Many people use this mode under the impression that this is a safer way to be browsing the net. It certainly is a good way to ensure that other people using your computer or device don’t see what websites you’ve been on, but does it actually make your Internet experience safe and secure?

The answer is, unfortunately, no. Chrome’s ‘Incognito’ might stop Chrome itself from logging your browsing data, but it doesn’t stop your operating system, your router, or the websites themselves from logging that you’re there. When streaming content, whether you’re in ‘Incognito’ mode or not, you open yourself up to data storing, and this mode does not hide your IP address, meaning that information such as your location, your browser, your operating system and even your physical address might still be seen.

But how do you make sure that your browsing is secure?

The only real way to make sure that your browsing is secure when you’re online is to use a VPN.

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, secures your browsing by ensuring that all the data that flows between your computer, iOS device, Android phone or your tablet and the Internet is subjected to bank-grade encryption, ensuring that there is no logging of your download history, web browsing or even your IP address from outside sources.

The great thing about SurfEasy’s VPN service in particular is that you can get set up and started in a matter of minutes, and the first 500mb of browsing is absolutely free!

Try our free VPN at, and ensure that your web browsing is safe and secure without ever having to rely on Google Chrome’s ‘Incognito’ feature again!
