How to look up the location of an IP address

Every computer with a connection to the web has an IP address. The IP address is what allows your computer to communicate with others over the internet, as the IP serves as a delivery address for data that’s sent from other computers or servers to you. In this way, the IP address functions just as your physical address, but in the virtual world.

However, like your physical address, your IP address can give away a lot of information about you.

As well as your location, which can sometimes be as specific as giving the longitude and latitude of where you are, your IP address can tell people other details like what type of OS you’re using, what type of router you’re using, and even your area code. They can also be used to track your movements online, or offer personalized ads based on your location.

But just how easy it is to look up the location of a computer from its IP address?

Well, these days, it’s very easy indeed. In fact, you can simply Google most IP addresses, and there are a wide number of websites dedicated to giving anyone and everyone the details of any IP address–including the location. This means that in a small number of clicks, anyone can have your private information.

You can check the location of your IP by visiting:

Is there a way to keep my IP address safe?

There is! In fact, there are a number of ways, but the easiest and most effective is by using a Virtual Private Network, or VPN service.

A Virtual Private Network works as a tunnel between you and the internet, and inside that tunnel, all of your data is encrypted, including your IP address. The VPN assigns you a fake IP that leads to the VPN, and then the VPN send the correct information your way, so that you’re effectively hidden from view online, but you can still use the web in exactly the same way that you were before. Simply put, a VPN allows you to change your IP address while browsing online.

In fact, the SurfEasy VPN also acts as a proxy, in that you can chose a region and “borrow” an IP address from that particular location, if you want to trick the web into believing you’re located in a particular place.

SurfEasy’s VPN service also allows you to use the VPN on up to five devices, so you can also surf safely and securely on your Android mobile and iOS tablet as well as your laptop or your home computer. In fact, SurfEasy’s VPN can ensure that your IP address is never found again.
