Tech for Travel: Which device should you take on your trip?

We all dream of disconnecting, logging off and forgetting our normal worlds when we go travelling, but the fact of the matter is that a little tech can go a long, long way—both figuratively and literally!

However, you don’t want to be bogged down with unnecessary luggage when you go. So which tech is the best for which type of trip?

**Cellphone

** Unless you’re planning to lose yourself in the foothills of Afghanistan or go on a two-week-long caving expedition, you’ll be best advised to take your cellphone on your vacation—and even if you are hitchhiking, mountaineering, potholing or swimming the English Channel, you’ll be putting yourself at a distinct disadvantage if you don’t have a phone with you, just for emergencies.

These days we can keep travel tickets, details, bookings and even music, movies and books on our phones, making them almost indispensible for travel. Sure, you might want to disconnect and detach from the real world for a while, but you might regret not having it when you’re lost in the Aussie outback and need to call the emergency services. Don’t forget—you can always turn it off.

**Tablets

** The one-size-fits-all device of the travelling world, tablets are almost perfect buddies to take with you no matter where you’re going. With all the compactness of the cellphone and some of the functionality of the laptop, a tablet will let you surf the web, watch movies, write emails, check social media, take photos and even write that novel and edit your images while you’re on the go.

And even better, they can do all this without the added bulk of the laptop. Perfect for long weekends and road trips and round-the-world journeys and city breaks and almost everything else.

Laptops

While a backpacking holiday might not be the perfect place to take your 17-inch Macbook, today’s laptops can be as light as a tablet and just as slim, meaning they can be slipped into a suitcase with no problems at all. Laptops, of course, make it easy to work on the go, so if you’re expecting to have to remotely clock in to the office job once or twice on your trip, it might be worth taking your computer with you.

Also, if you’re expecting long plane, train or bus journeys, you can settle yourself into your trip with endless episodes of Breaking Bad. Or is that just us?

**Desktop computer

** No. Leave this one at home.
