Why all students need a non-campus VPN

Whether you’re just off to college for the first time, or you’re going back for your final year, you’re probably going to need a VPN.

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, functions as an encryption tunnel between you and the internet. All of the data that comes in or out of your device is encrypted. This masks your identity and location, and provides an effective layer of security for everything you do online.

Essentially, a VPN protects you and your information while you’re on the internet.

For students, this is even more important. At college, you’ll spend a lot of your time online—not just in your room, but in different campus buildings, in libraries, in cafes and on public WiFi hotspots. These hotspots are often unsecured and leave your information vulnerable.

It may be that your campus offers a VPN for use. However, at best it is unlikely to offer you all the protection and features that you need, and at worst it may actually stifle your online freedom and stop you from doing everything that you need to do online.

Here are a few reasons you need a non-campus VPN while you’re at college:

If you want to be protected no matter where you are

Some campus VPNs can only be used on campus. Some can only be used off-campus. In both cases, you won’t be protected all of the time, and you won’t be protected where you need it most: When you’re on public WiFi hotspots, such as those in cafes and libraries.

You also need to be able to have a VPN on all your devices, not just on your laptop or phone. SurfEasy VPN can be used on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android platforms, as well as on Amazon Fire tablets and within the Chrome and Opera browsers. You can protect up to five devices with one account, meaning you’re never left vulnerable.

If you want to connect to a different server or a different region

It’s likely that your campus VPN proxies your connection so it appears that you’re connecting from the university network. Of course, if you want to access content from another country, or you want to appear to the internet as if you’re connecting from somewhere else entirely, this won’t help you. SurfEasy has 28 regions to connect to, making it appear as if you’re in that region. SurfEasy makes it so you cannot be traced back to your college network.

If you want to torrent safely

Campus VPNs are designed to protect the university’s assets and so aren’t geared entirely towards a positive user experience, meaning you may not be able to do everything you want to do with a campus VPN. Many either don’t allow torrenting or block torrent services. SurfEasy VPN offers torrent protection that will automatically alert you to connect to the VPN as soon as you attempt to torrent, meaning that you will never be vulnerable when torrenting again.

If you want total online freedom without firewalls or blocks

Some campus VPNs may block access to some sites or services. This might mean that you can’t access your favourite apps or visit your favourite websites. SurfEasy VPN allows you to get past blockers and firewalls so by using SurfEasy VPN, you take back your online freedom no matter where you are—and that includes when you’re on campus.

To ensure you have total freedom and security while you’re at college, we’re offering you a huge 50% off a SurfEasy Ultra annual plan! This offer runs form August 31st to September 11th, so click here to get protected—and don’t miss out!
